The Territory of Washington was an organized incorporated territory of the United States that existed from March 2,until Novemwhen the territory was admitted to the Union as the State of was created from the portion of the Oregon Territory north of the lower Columbia River and north of the 46th parallel east of the l: Olympia.

For a time in the mid-nineteenth century, the future state of Idaho was part of Washington. When Washington Territory was created inits boundaries encompassed Idaho's Panhandle, the northern region bordering the present-day state of Washington, and part of what is now western Montana.

The rest of Idaho joined Washington Territory in The Montana Territory was organized out of the existing Idaho Territory by Act of Congress and signed into law by President Abraham Lincoln on The areas east of the Continental Divide had been previously part of the Nebraska Territory and Dakota Territory and had been acquired by the United States in the Louisiana Purchase.
